Outdoor Burn Injuries

Sunburns: Hiking, Boating, Skiing, Fishing, Hunting, Surfing

Outdoor burn injuries are incredibly common. Outdoor activities involve increased exposure to the sun, whether hiking, boating, skiing, fishing, hunting or surfing. According to a report by the Center for Disease Control, around 50% of adults 18-29 years had at least one sunburn in 2010 (https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/pdf/wk/mm6118.pdf). In another study conducted by the CDC, two-thirds of adults reported that they had been burned more than once in the previous year (https://www.webmd.com/healthy-beauty/news/20070531/sunburns-up-which-state-is-worst). Children tend to be even more susceptible to sunburn than adults.

No matter your type of activity, spending time outside in the sun without sunscreen leads to sunburns. BurnFree’s Medical Strength Sunburn Rescue will cool the burn, relieve sunburn pain and stop the progress of the injury.

While conventional wisdom is to use aloe vera on sunburns, recent studies have found the effectiveness of aloe vera on sunburns to be inconclusive. (Burns. 2007 Sep;33(6):713-8. Epub 2007 May 17) (J Med Assoc Thai. 2005 Sep;88 Suppl 4:S173-6) Aloe vera can be drying to the skin and does not provide the cooling relief needed to stop the burn progression.

BurnFree’s Medical Strength Sunburn Rescue is thicker than BurnFree gel, making it more viscous. This means that the gel adheres to a sunburn rather than running off the wound, dissipating heat on contact. BurnFree does not evaporate, and cools through transference of the heat into the gel system.

Because BurnFree’s technologically-advanced hydrogel formula remains stable at a wide range of temperatures, it is ideal for use in the sun. Being portable, easy to use, completely water soluble, BurnFree is a must have for every family to minimize the effects of overexposure to the sun.

BurnFree never uses anesthetic drugs, such as lidocaine, in its formulation that can cause allergic reactions or is prohibited by many local regulations worldwide.

Friction Burns: Motorcycles, Bicycles, Skateboards, Inline Skates, Scooters

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were over 250,000 outdoor injuries from ATVs, mopeds and minibikes, over 500,000 injuries from bicycles, 37,000 injuries from inline skates, over 100,000 injuries from skateboards, and 69,000 injuries from skates (not including inline). (https://www.cpsc.gov/PageFiles/113417/cpsr_nws38.pdf)

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that Between 2001 and 2008, more than 1,222,000 persons were treated in a U.S. emergency department (ED) for a non-fatal motorcycle-related injury.

“The term ‘road rash’ is generally used to describe a shallow abrasion caused by the friction that results when skin moving at speed meets the ground or other unmoving surface. Cyclists, skateboarders and inline skaters are particularly prone to this sort of injury. Although road rash doesn't typically result in a great deal of bleeding, it can be extremely painful outdoor injury, due to the exposure of nerve endings in the abraded skin. The risk of infection due to wound contamination at time of injury is considerable, so cleaning and care of a road rash injury should be taken seriously.” (https://www.ehow.com/how_2277804_treat-road-rash.html)

BurnFree can help with frictions burns such as road rash. BurnFree Pain Relieving Gels come in several different sizes—including single dose packets, 2oz and 4oz bottles—conveniently portable for use in kits. BurnFree gel is predominantly pure di-ionized water which is thickened with a gelling agent to enable the water to stay in place over the wound site. While water is effective as a first aid for burns, it is difficult to keep in place. BurnFree gels the water to allow for effective and easy cooling directly on the burn site. BurnFree also has a wetting agent with the gel system to allow better penetration of the water into clothing or debris imbedded in the wound. This wetting agent allows the softening of this material to help ease the debridement process.

BurnFree Sterile Burn and Wound Dressings can be used on burns, including friction burn. They are perfect for soothing burn injuries over small areas. The dressings are constructed of a special, soft, open-cell foam saturated with the BurnFree solution. BurnFree dressings efficiently cover the burned area and yet are elastic enough to accommodate possible swelling or the need to flex joints. They are also light and easily transportable. The foam carrier’s high absorption capabilities allow complete delivery of the gel to the burn site. BurnFree dressings are non-adherent and the inert foam base will not shed threads, strands, fibers, etc., that might become embedded in the wound.

Burns from Campfire, Kerosene Stoves and Lanterns, Fireworks

Outdoor activities often involve fire in some form—campfires, bon fires, kerosene stoves, lanterns and fireworks. Outdoor injuries and Burns from campfires often come from flash flames in igniting the fire, and contact with the campfire itself. Often these injuries transpire in remote areas where medical care is not readily available.

BurnFree Fire/Trauma Blankets can be used to extinguish a fire, or to treat widespread bodily injury. The blankets utilize a worsted wool blanket soaked in the gel that designed to hold 12 times it weight in gel and is perfect in covering widespread bodily burn injury at once while transporting to a medical facility. For immediate first aid treatment, the blankets can be wrapped around a person whose clothes are burning or who has sustained a burn injury. BurnFree blankets will instantly extinguish fires, while at the same time, wetting and cooling the fuel, which is usually clothing. This use of BurnFree blankets reduces physiological and psychological trauma by providing immediate cooling, soothing, and moistening of the burn.

All outdoor burn injuries are unexpected. Be prepared with BurnFree Products.
